Iowa Immigrants
In order that all Iowans can access school, work, and all of the necessities of life, drivers licenses should be available to everyone who lives here. Allowing all permanent residents to legally drive, purchase and insure vehicles, and secure reliable transportation benefits every part of the community. Currently, 18 states issue licenses to undocumented immigrants, which improves public safety and the flexibility of the workforce, no longer tied to public transit schedules and routes.
We should directly clarify in state code that no human is illegal, and that we will uphold the basic human rights of all, regardless of citizenship or residential status.
In addition, no interaction with local government, whether it be an application for a business license, a call for assistance during an act of domestic violence, or an application to serve on a local board or committee, should have the potential to lead to an inquiry into a resident’s immigration status or that of their family.
Finally, translations must be available for all official documents and signage.
